100% Guaranteed Solution When Korean Delivery Apps Reject Foreign Credit Cards
I've compiled practical solutions for when your foreign credit card is blocked on Baedal Minjok or Yogiyo, including using a debit card, PayPal, or Kakao Pay.
Have you ever been frustrated because your foreign credit card kept getting blocked when trying to order delivery in Korea? I remember being flustered when I first came to Korea and tried to order chicken from Baedal Minjok but couldn't pay with my card. I'm sharing the sure-fire solutions I found after some trial and error.
Why Foreign Cards Get Rejected
The reason Korean delivery apps block foreign cards is simple: security policies and transaction fees. Especially large platforms like Baedal Minjok and Yogiyo are quite strict about credit or debit cards issued overseas.
But the funny thing is, even with the same foreign card, sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't. This depends on the individual card company's policies or the system's status on that particular day.
The Most Reliable Solution: Get a Korean Debit Card
Honestly, if you're planning to stay in Korea long-term, it's easiest to open a Korean bank account and get a debit card. With just your Alien Registration Card, you can open an account at most banks.
Recommended Banks:
- KakaoBank - Easy to use via the app, no annual fee
- Toss Bank - Mobile-focused, convenient for international transfers
- Kookmin Bank - Easy to find ATMs nationwide
- Shinhan Bank - Excellent services for foreigners
Once you have a debit card, paying for delivery apps and online shopping becomes much easier. It usually takes about 1-2 weeks to get the card, so it's good to prepare in advance.
When You're Starving Right Now: Instantly Usable Methods
Utilize Kakao Pay
Kakao Pay surprisingly often accepts foreign card registrations. Visa or Mastercard have a high success rate. You register your foreign card with Kakao Pay and then pay via Kakao Pay on the delivery app.
The registration method is simple. In KakaoTalk, go to 'More → Pay → Add card' and enter your foreign card information. You might not receive the SMS during the authentication process, in which case, call your card company's customer center and check if international payments are enabled.
Try Linking PayPal
Some delivery apps support PayPal payments. Yogiyo, for example, has a PayPal option, so check it out. If you register your foreign card with PayPal, it acts as an intermediary, often allowing the payment to go through.
Use Prepaid or Gift Cards
Prepaid cards like Happy Money or Book Culture Gift Certificates sold at convenience stores are another option. You can buy them with cash and recharge them online to use on delivery apps. However, this method is a bit cumbersome.
App-Specific Tips
How to Conquer Baedal Minjok
Baemin is quite picky, but here are a few tips:
- Try paying during the early morning hours (2-4 AM) - Success rate is higher due to less system load
- Start with a small amount - Try ordering from ₩10,000 or less
- Charge Baemin Pay first and then use it
Yogiyo is Relatively Lenient
Yogiyo is more lenient with foreign cards than Baemin. It supports PayPal payments, and the success rate for direct foreign card payments is also higher. If it doesn't work on Baemin, try Yogiyo first.
Utilize Coupang Eats
Coupang Eats seems to handle foreign card payments relatively well, perhaps because it's an Amazon affiliate. However, the limited delivery area is a drawback, but it covers most major areas in Seoul.
Pre-Payment Checklist
Before attempting to pay with a foreign card, check these things:
- Card company's international payment allowance settings - Check in the card company's app or customer center
- Daily limit check - Make sure your daily international payment limit is sufficient
- Card expiration date - Make sure it hasn't expired
- Billing address - Enter the Korean address accurately
Last Resort: Cash Order
When all else fails, use a cash order. It's less common these days, but there are still businesses that accept cash payments. However, in this case, the delivery fee may be a bit more expensive, and you'll need to prepare change, so check in advance.
Common Mistakes
Here are some common mistakes I've seen while helping my foreign friends:
- Trying without a Korean mobile phone number - Blocked during the authentication process
- Entering the delivery address in English - Must be a Korean address
- Not reporting international payments to the card company - Automatically blocked for security reasons
- Paying with a VPN turned on - Rejected due to IP address
Avoiding these things will significantly increase your success rate. Be sure to turn off your VPN before paying.
These things can be stressful in the early days of living in Korea, but once you set it up, it becomes easier. Try these methods in order when you want to get delivery quickly, and in the long term, I recommend creating a Korean bank account.
