Seoul to Busan: KTX vs. SRT vs. Bus - Which is Best?
Your guide to getting from Seoul to Busan! KTX (₩59,800), SRT (₩51,700), Bus (from ₩25,400). Find the perfect option for your budget and time.
So, you're trying to get from Seoul to Busan (320km). There are more options than you might think, which can make it a tough choice. From the speedy KTX to the budget-friendly bus, I'll break down the pros and cons of each.
Train Travel: KTX vs. SRT
Taking the train is usually the easiest option. You don't have to worry about traffic or the weather, and the trains are usually on time.
KTX: Fastest, but Priciest
The KTX from Seoul Station to Busan Station takes 2 hours 30 minutes to 3 hours, and costs ₩59,800. Honestly, it's so fast that you barely get a chance to look at the scenery! It's comfortable, but the price can be a bit much.
SRT: Cheaper, but Seats Could Be Better
The SRT from Suseo Station to Busan Station takes 2 hours 30 minutes and costs ₩51,700, about ₩8,000 cheaper than the KTX. Legroom is better than on the KTX, which is great if you're tall, but the seats themselves aren't as comfortable. Suseo Station is in Gangnam, so you'll need to factor in travel time to get there.
Mugunghwa Train: Recommended if you have time
Much cheaper than the KTX, and you can actually enjoy the scenery. It takes longer, but it's a good option if you want to savor the journey.
Bus Travel: Best Bang for Your Buck
Buses depart from the Gyeongbu Line Express Bus Terminal (Express Bus Terminal Station, Line 3). All buses take about 4 hours, but prices vary depending on the seat class.
Regular Express Bus: ₩25,400
The cheapest option. Seats are a bit cramped, but bearable for 4 hours. If you're on a tight budget, this is the way to go.
Deluxe Express Bus: ₩37,800
Wider, more comfortable seats. Worth the extra ₩10,000 for the added comfort, in my opinion.
Premium Bus: ₩49,100
Super comfortable seats, with outlets and TVs. Almost the same price as the KTX, but you can relax and sleep for the whole 4-hour journey. Overnight buses start from ₩41,500, making them a bit cheaper.
Pros of the bus: You get a 10-15 minute break at a rest stop along the way, so you don't feel too cooped up. However, traffic on weekends can add significant time, so I'd recommend the train then.
Flying: Quickest, but Factor in Airport Travel
Flights from Gimpo Airport to Gimhae Airport take 1 hour, and cost around ₩30,000~80,000. Prices vary a lot depending on the airline and time of year, so check in advance.
The catch is that it takes another 30 minutes by subway to get from Gimhae Airport to downtown Busan. When you factor in airport check-in times, the total travel time can be similar to the KTX.
Traveling to Busan from Other Cities
- Daejeon → Busan: 1 hour 30 minutes to 2 hours by KTX
- Daegu → Busan: 1 hour by KTX
- Gwangju → Busan: No direct trains, so you'll have to take a bus
Foreigners: Consider a Korea Rail Pass
There's a Korea Rail Pass exclusively for foreign tourists. They offer passes from 2 to 5 days, which can be much more economical if you're planning to visit multiple cities. Prices vary for adults, youth, and children, so be sure to check the details.
Recommendations Based on Your Needs
In a hurry?: Take the KTX or SRT. If Suseo Station is closer to you, choose the SRT.
On a budget?: Take the regular express bus. You can get to Busan for ₩25,400.
Want comfort?: Take the KTX or the premium bus. Prices are similar, so choose based on your preference.
Want to see the scenery?: Take the Mugunghwa train or an express bus. The KTX is too fast to see much!
Once you arrive in Busan, you can take buses from the Seobu (West) Bus Terminal to Tongyeong, Geoje, and other western cities. Choose wisely based on your travel plans!
