Korea Express Bus Guide: How To Book Tickets, Find Terminals and Travel Between Cities
By Lee
Everything foreigners need to know about Korea's intercity buses — booking on kobus.co.kr, prices from Seoul to Busan, terminal locations, bus classes and tips.
If the KTX is too expensive for your budget, Korea's express buses are the best alternative. You can travel from Seoul to Busan for less than half the price of the KTX, and booking is easy online. Once you understand the Korea express bus system, you can significantly cut down on travel expenses.
Book express buses through the 'T Money GO' app. Foreign card payments are accepted. For departures from Seoul, the main terminal is the Gangnam Express Bus Terminal (Express Bus Terminal Station on Lines 3, 7, and 9). A premium bus to Busan costs about ₩33,800.
Express Bus vs Intercity Bus
There are two types of intercity bus services in Korea. For foreign tourists, express buses are more familiar and convenient.
| Category | Express Bus | Intercity Bus |
|---|---|---|
| Main Routes | Direct routes between major cities (Seoul-Busan, Seoul-Gwangju, etc.) | Includes routes via smaller cities |
| Booking Site | kobus.co.kr | bustago.or.kr (Korean only) |
| Terminal | Express Bus Terminal (separate building) | Intercity Bus Terminal (separate building) |
| Foreign Tourist Convenience | English support, foreign card payments accepted | Mainly in Korean, on-site purchase recommended |
| Speed | Direct on highways, relatively fast | Stops in intermediate cities, relatively slow |
For most tourists, express buses are the way to go. Some destinations like Gyeongju, Jeonju, and Suncheon may only be served by intercity buses, in which case buying tickets directly at the terminal is the easiest option.
Seoul Express Bus Terminal Locations
Seoul has several express and intercity bus terminals. It's important to check in advance which terminal your bus departs from, depending on your destination.
Seoul Express Bus Terminal / Central City (Gangnam)
This is the largest express bus terminal in Seoul. It connects directly to the Express Bus Terminal Station on Lines 3, 7, and 9. Most major destinations like Busan, Gwangju, Daejeon, and Jeonju depart from here. The terminal building has convenience stores, restaurants, and luggage storage facilities. English signage is well-provided, making it easy for foreigners to use.
Dong Seoul Terminal (Gangbyeon Station)
This terminal mainly serves routes to Gangwon Province (Chuncheon, Gangneung, Sokcho) and eastern regions. It connects to Gangbyeon Station on Line 2. Use this terminal if you're planning a trip to Gangwon Province.
Nambu Terminal
Connected to Nambu Terminal Station on Line 3. It serves some routes to Jeollanam-do and buses connecting to ferries to Jeju. It's relatively smaller in size.
PRO TIP: Use coin lockers or luggage storage facilities in the terminal to travel worry-free about your bags during your trip. Seoul Express Bus Terminal has manned luggage storage.
How To Book Express Bus Tickets
There are four ways for foreigners to book Korean express bus tickets.
1. kobus.co.kr Website (Recommended)
This is the official express bus booking site. There's an English switch button at the top right, and you can pay with foreign Visa/Mastercard. Select your departure, destination, and date to see a list of buses by time. After payment, a reservation confirmation is sent via email, and you board with a QR code or reservation number.
2. On-site Purchase at Terminals
You can buy tickets directly at the terminal counter or ticket machine. At the counter, just say or write down your destination and date/time. Ticket machines are mostly in Korean, so using the counter is easier. Foreign card payments are accepted. However, popular routes (like Seoul-Busan) can sell out on weekends or holidays, so it's best to book in advance.
3. Klook or T-Money GO
You can purchase express bus tickets through the Klook app or T-Money GO.
Choosing Bus Classes
There are three classes of Korean express buses.
| Class | Seat Arrangement | Facilities | Price Difference | Recommended For |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Premium | 2+1 (3 seats/row) | Spacious legroom, USB charging, reclining seats | 40-50% more expensive than regular | Long-distance travel, when you want more space |
| Regular | 2+2 (4 seats/row) | Basic reclining | Standard price | Short distances, budget-saving |
| Night Premium | 2+1 | Same as Premium, operates at night | 10-20% more expensive than Premium | Saving on accommodation by traveling overnight |
I strongly recommend the Premium bus for trips longer than 2 hours. The extra legroom and USB charging make it much more comfortable.

Before You Board the Express Bus
Luggage Storage
Large suitcases or backpacks are stored in the bus's undercarriage. Hand them to the driver, who will load them for you. There's usually no strict weight or number limit, but check in advance if your luggage is excessively large. Keep valuables in your carry-on bag.
Seat Selection
When booking on kobus.co.kr, you can choose your seat. Opt for a window seat if you want to enjoy the view, or an aisle seat if you need frequent bathroom breaks or extra legroom. Premium buses have a 2+1 arrangement, so there's no middle seat, making it more comfortable.
Rest Stops
Long-distance buses stop 1-2 times at highway rest stops, usually for 15-20 minutes. They have restrooms, convenience stores, and restaurants. Korean highway rest stop food is quite famous for being tasty, so be sure to check it out. Return to the bus on time, as it may leave if you're late.
USB Charging and Wi-Fi
Most Premium buses have USB charging ports. Some buses offer Wi-Fi, but it can be slow. Prepare a Korean SIM or eSIM to use the internet during bus travel.
Holidays (Chuseok & Seollal) Warning
During Chuseok (Lunar August 15) and Seollal (Lunar January 1), express bus tickets sell out weeks in advance. If you plan to travel long distances during these times, book at least 2-3 weeks early.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Can I book on kobus.co.kr with a foreign card?
Yes, you can. kobus.co.kr accepts Visa and Mastercard foreign cards. Switch to the English page and enter your card details at the payment stage. Sometimes, card companies block overseas payments, so it's a good idea to request overseas payment approval from your card company before traveling.
Is same-day purchase possible?
On weekdays or during off-peak seasons, you can buy tickets at the terminal counter on the same day. However, on weekends or holidays, especially for popular routes, tickets can sell out, so it's best to book in advance.
Is there a bathroom on the bus?
Korean express buses do not have bathrooms. Instead, they stop 1-2 times at highway rest stops. It's recommended to use the bathroom before departure.
How much luggage can I bring?
There's no official weight/number limit, but excessively large luggage may not be accommodated. Generally, 2-3 large suitcases can be loaded without issue.
Are night buses safe?
Yes, Korean express buses adhere to strict safety standards, and night buses are safe. Professional drivers take turns driving, and there are highway CCTVs and tracking systems in place.
Are tickets unavailable during holidays?
During Chuseok and Seollal holidays, demand skyrockets, and tickets sell out quickly. Reservations start 1-2 months in advance, so if you plan to travel during these holidays, book as early as possible.
Once you try using Korean express buses, you'll be amazed by their convenience and cost-effectiveness. If you thought the KTX was your only option, try taking a bus for at least one leg of your journey. The views of Korea's countryside from the window are quite worthwhile.
